Bi-directional charging is an umbrella term for technology that allows an electric vehicle's battery to discharge power outward, not just receive it. Depending on how your home is wired and which vehicle you drive, the capability varies.
This is not just a feature. It is a fundamental shift in how your vehicle fits into your home's energy system.

Power tools and devices
Use your vehicle's battery to run appliances, tools, or electronics directly. Useful on job sites, camping, or anywhere grid power isn't available.

power your entire house
With the right wiring and compatible hardware, your vehicle's battery feeds directly into your home's electrical panel. Your car becomes a backup generator.

send power back to the grid
At the utility scale, vehicles can return stored energy to the grid during peak demand. Ontario infrastructure for this is emerging.

Tesla Cybertruck Powershare. The Most Capable
Vehicle-to-Home System on the Market.
The Cybertruck is Tesla's first production vehicle with full bi-directional capability. Powershare allows it to output up to 11.5 kW continuously, enough to run a home's essential circuits during an outage.
When paired with a Powerwall 3 and a properly configured home, Powershare creates a seamless, automatic backup system. If the grid drops and your truck is plugged in, your home switches over without intervention.

Tesla has confirmed that bi-directional charging is expanding across its lineup. The new Model Y Performance now supports vehicle-to-load capability, with vehicle-to-home capability expanding via software update as the hardware and home infrastructure catches up.

The Home Has to Be Ready.
Bi-directional charging requires specific home-side electrical work to function safely and correctly. A standard Wall Connector installation won't support V2H on its own. Mavric Electric designs and installs the full system so both sides are configured properly.
