Lutron Lighting Control in Hamilton: Caséta vs RA3 vs HomeWorks

Every Lutron lighting control system dims a light beautifully. The difference is everything around that light: how many rooms it reaches, what the keypads look like, whether your shades join the scene, and what it costs installed. Here's how Hamilton homeowners should choose between Caséta, RadioRA 3, and HomeWorks, and what each one really runs.

The Short Answer

Caséta fits a single room, a condo, or a first step into smart dimming. RadioRA 3 is our default for whole-home control in renovations and custom builds. HomeWorks is for large estates and projects with Ketra tunable lighting on the spec.

In Hamilton, Caséta typically runs $300 to $500 per room installed, RadioRA 3 whole-home systems run $5,000 to $25,000+, and HomeWorks starts around $35,000.

Why Most Homes Get Lighting Control Wrong

Most homeowners already live like they want lighting control. They just don't have it.

Lutron's 2026 Luxury Residential Trend Report, based on a Harris Poll survey of affluent homeowners, found 60% adjust their lighting by mood or time of day. Only 9% use preset scenes. Yet 42% say they want them.

"The gap between wanting scenes and using scenes is rarely the homeowner's fault. It's a system chosen at the wrong scale, or one that was installed and never properly programmed."

Too small and you outgrow it in a year. Too large and you pay for capacity you never use. Right size, no programming, and you own expensive light switches.

Lutron Caséta: The Smart Starting Point

Caséta is Lutron's wireless system for smaller projects. It runs on Lutron's Clear Connect radio, far more reliable than Wi-Fi switches, and works with Apple Home, Alexa, Google Home, and Savant.

Older Hamilton homes. Many houses in Durand, Kirkendall, and Westdale have no neutral wire in the switch box. Most smart switches need one. Caséta dimmers don't.

Single rooms and condos. A kitchen or primary suite can be done in a day.

Lowest cost of entry. Schedules, app control, and voice control without a full system.

Where it runs out of room: Caséta caps at 75 devices per hub, and its Pico remotes are the closest thing to a keypad. Caséta devices can't move into a RadioRA 3 system later. If you already know you want whole-home control, starting with Caséta usually means buying twice.

Lutron RadioRA 3 Cost and Capability

RadioRA 3 is Lutron's professional wireless system, designed and programmed by an authorized dealer. It's the system we specify most.

Engraved Sunnata keypads. One button labelled "Dinner" or "Goodnight" moves every light in the room at once. This is what turns an app into an experience.

Real capacity. One processor handles a full custom home: dimmers, keypads, sensors, and shades.

Shade integration. Lutron shades join the same scenes as your lights. We covered why that pairing matters in our post on motorized shading and lighting controls.

Retrofit-friendly. Wireless dimmers replace existing switches. Most finished homes in Ancaster and Burlington are upgraded without opening drywall.

Whole-home integration. RadioRA 3 connects to Savant, so lighting becomes one layer of a home that also runs audio, climate, and security.

Worth knowing: some RadioRA 3 devices need a neutral and some don't. We check every switch box during the walkthrough, so the device schedule matches the wiring you actually have.

Lutron HomeWorks: The Flagship

HomeWorks is built for large estates, multi-building properties, and homes where light quality is part of the architecture.

Ketra is on the spec. Ketra fixtures deliver full-spectrum, tunable light that follows daylight through the day, and they run on HomeWorks.

The scale demands it. Hundreds of loads, wired panels, and multiple structures.

The design is uncompromising. Lutron's most refined keypads and finishes, matched to your designer's palette.

For most Hamilton custom homes, RadioRA 3 delivers what homeowners want. We'll tell you plainly when a project calls for HomeWorks, and when it doesn't.

How Much Does Lutron Lighting Control Cost in Hamilton?

Cost depends on controlled loads, keypads, shades, and whether walls are open. Typical installed ranges across Hamilton, Ancaster, and Burlington:

Caséta, single room (2 to 4 dimmers plus hub): $300 to $1,200

Caséta, main floor retrofit: $1,500 to $5,000

RadioRA 3, starter (processor, kitchen, great room, exterior): $5,000 to $10,000

RadioRA 3, whole home: $12,000 to $25,000+

HomeWorks, large custom home: $35,000 to $100,000+, before Ketra fixtures

Lutron motorized shades: $1,200 to $2,500+ per window

Design, programming, and commissioning: included in every Mavric quote

Ontario note: Swapping a switch for a smart dimmer is electrical work. In Ontario, a Licensed Electrical Contractor must file a notification with the Electrical Safety Authority (ESA). Mavric handles all ESA permitting and inspection on every lighting control project.

Financing: Mavric partners with Financeit for 0% financing and payment deferral options, on approved credit. A RadioRA 3 system can be spread into predictable monthly payments.

Pro Tip: Programming Is Half the System

Hardware is only half of lighting control. Every scene, schedule, and button has to be built around how you actually live, then calibrated in the room. Factory defaults make a great system feel like a dimmer.

Ask any installer you're considering three things. Who programs the scenes? Do you calibrate on site? Do you come back after a few weeks to adjust? Our process ends with a full handoff walkthrough, and we revisit programming once you've lived with it.

Timing matters too. Clocks fall back November 1, and for the next five months Hamilton homes will spend more evening hours under electric light than daylight. Most retrofits take a single day, so a system booked this fall is dialled in well before the holidays.

The Bottom Line

Caséta is the smartest way to start small. RadioRA 3 is the right answer for most homeowners who want whole-home control done properly. HomeWorks is for homes where light is part of the architecture.

The best way to know which fits is to walk the house. As a Lutron and Savant authorized dealer, CEDIA certified integrator, and licensed electrical contractor, Mavric designs, installs, and programs every system in-house across Hamilton, Burlington, the GTA, and Niagara. Category: Smart Power & Battery Storage Reading Time: ~9 min Battery Storage as an Energy Resilience Strategy: Standalone, Solar-Paired, or Generator Backup Battery storage has moved from a niche add-on to a core resilience decision for Hamilton homeowners — one that works on its own, or as the missing link between solar and true energy independence, or as the quiet partner to a standby generator. Here's how to think about which role it should play in your home. The short answer A home battery system is no longer just "a battery for your solar panels." Installed correctly, it's a resilience layer that can stand entirely on its own, extend the value of an existing solar array, or work alongside a whole-home generator to cut fuel use and eliminate the transfer gap. Standalone battery backup systems in Hamilton typically run $14,000 to $18,000 installed for a single unit, with multi-battery whole-home systems ranging $28,000 to $55,000+ — and pairing a battery with Savant Power smart load management adds meaningful runtime and monitoring value without adding another battery. Why battery storage is a resilience strategy on its own Homeowners often assume a battery only makes sense if they already have solar. That's no longer accurate. A standalone battery — charged from the grid during off-peak hours — provides: Silent, instant backup. Systems like the Tesla Powerwall 3 detect a grid interruption within milliseconds and switch over with no generator start-up delay, no fuel, and no exhaust. Selective or whole-home coverage. Depending on battery count and home size, a system can back up critical circuits (fridge, sump pump, home office) or the entire panel. Rate arbitrage. In homes on time-of-use billing, a battery can charge overnight at off-peak rates and offset daytime peak-rate consumption — a benefit unrelated to outages at all. Zero moving parts. No annual fuel line inspection, no combustion engine maintenance, no ESA-required exhaust clearances to plan around. For an older Hamilton home in a neighbourhood like Durand or Kirkendall — where panel capacity is often limited and adding a large-output generator can mean panel upgrades — a standalone battery is frequently the lower-friction path to real resilience. As an accessory to solar: closing the loop For homes with solar already installed, a battery converts intermittent generation into dispatchable power. Without storage, solar-only systems commonly shut down during a grid outage — a safety requirement, since inverters can't backfeed power onto lines utility crews may be working on. Adding storage: Lets the solar array continue charging the battery during daylight hours of an outage Allows stored solar energy to be used at night or during the next outage window, rather than exported back to the grid for credit Meaningfully shortens payback period, since self-consumption of solar energy is worth more than export credits under most current Ontario billing arrangements "The homes getting the most value from solar right now aren't the ones with the biggest arrays — they're the ones storing what they generate instead of selling it back for pennies on the dollar." As a companion to a standby generator Battery storage and a Generac whole-home generator aren't competing technologies — paired together, they solve each other's weak points. The transfer gap. A generator typically takes 10–30 seconds to start and transfer load. A battery bridges that gap instantly, so sensitive electronics never see an interruption. Fuel efficiency on short outages. Most outages last under two hours. A battery can absorb the entire event without the generator ever firing, saving fuel and engine hours for the long-duration outages that actually need it. Quieter operation. For overnight or short daytime outages, a battery keeps the home running without engine noise — a real consideration on tighter urban lots. Extended runtime on propane-restricted properties. In rural areas around Hamilton where propane delivery can be delayed during a widespread outage, a battery buys time before the generator's fuel supply becomes the limiting factor. Where Savant Smart Load management fits in Adding a battery — or a battery-plus-generator system — solves the resilience question. Savant Power's load management platform solves the efficiency and visibility questions that come next. Extending battery life: Battery capacity is finite, and how a home draws from it during an outage determines how long that capacity lasts. Savant automatically sheds or prioritizes circuits based on rules set in advance — keeping refrigeration, sump pumps, and networking equipment running continuously while cycling down high-draw, non-essential loads like electric dryers, pool pumps, or secondary water heaters. This can extend usable backup runtime by hours on the same battery capacity, rather than requiring a larger (and more expensive) battery bank to cover peak-load scenarios that rarely happen simultaneously. Monitoring and insights: Outside of outage events, Savant provides circuit-level visibility into where electricity is actually being used — not just a single whole-home number, but a breakdown by circuit and appliance over time. For homeowners, this turns into: Identifying which appliances or systems are driving the largest share of the bill Spotting abnormal consumption early (a failing appliance, a space heater left running, a well pump short-cycling) Verifying that a battery is charging and discharging as expected, rather than finding out during the next outage that it wasn't Data to make an informed decision about whether to add a second battery, add solar, or right-size a generator — instead of guessing For a homeowner weighing a battery-only system against a battery-plus-generator system, Savant is frequently the deciding factor: it makes a single battery perform like a larger one by managing when and what draws from it.
